Software industry piracy rate drops again

China's software industry piracy rate dropped four percentage points in 2007, according to sources from "2007 China's software piracy rate survey" assessment meeting held by the State Intellectual Property Office recently.

In 2007, China's software industry's sales, including computer software products and embedded software products, rose to 580 billion yuan, the survey which is commissioned by the State Intellectual Property Office and conducted by the internet laboratory shows.

Calculating the price of the pirated software by their market value, in 2007 China's software industry piracy rate dropped from 24 percent in 2006 to 20 percent, a decrease of 4 percentage points.

The main reason for the drop in piracy rate is China's efforts in promoting genuine software in recent years, experts said. The mandatory installation of the operating system in particular, effectively checked the most serious problem, operating system software piracy.
